Yahoo! Alerts Nods Off, but Yahoo! Pipes a Dream

By NikNik | October 25, 2007

dream1.jpgWe previously mentioned the use of Google Alerts for your real estate marketing research, and now Yahoo account users can take advantage of  Yahoo! Alerts. But don’t get too excited. Yahoo! Alerts does provide a free information delivery service via email, instant message, pager, or cell phone. And getting alerts by cell phone is pretty cool. But I had to weed through Yahoo’s rows of content categories to find their keyword search in “News”. Also, each content category has you setting alerts in different ways, making set up time longer. Yahoo does throw us a bone by offering alerts on blogs and feeds. But I’m way too addicted to my Google Reader for feed organization.

Personally, the interface and content categories on Yahoo leave me frustrated and headed right back to Google. Google Alerts has a fabulous simple search that scans News, Web, Video, Blogs and Groups. But, it’s your choice!

On a more exciting and advanced note, Yahoo! Pipes is a winner! For me, this is the best application I have seen and used from Yahoo! Those of us that maintain more than one blog and often guest post on other blogs, may be wishing you had an uber-RSS feed that synchronized all your web content into a single delivery source. Well, you can create such an uber-RSS by using Yahoo! Pipes. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! For detailed instructions on creating your own Pipes, visit Technology for Real Estate.

I’ve got to agree that Google Alerts is amazing and extremely useful. It’s as if you have your fingers on the pulse of their index. Very cool. Will have to check out Yahoo! Pipes, that sounds like a winner.
