Calling All Realtors: “Bob’s Your Uncle!”
By NikNik | October 17, 2007
How many of you have piles on your desk that have birthed their own piles? I can see a few hands out there in the blogosphere. And I’ve seen one too many real estate office organizational atrocities! But seriously, not all of us are organized by nature. I have Marnald (Martha Stewart & Donald Trump) for a business partner. And I’m always amazed how utterly beautiful her office is, as well as being simply organized.
So, is there help for those of us who aspire to be well organized, with class or sass?! Of course, just visit SeeJaneWork and you’ll be inspired to dress up your organizational skills! And guys, the “Janes” aren’t the only ones benefiting from pretty organizers; there are even simple ways you “Dicks” can get ship shape as well! Here is my list of must-haves:
- Whoomi 2008 Wall Calendar: An all in one way to organize your home, real estate business, and extra activities. This calendar is meant to help you balance all the events in your life. (I wonder if it comes with a chauffer and masseuse.) And for work only, I favor 30-60 day at a glance whiteboard calendars that you can usually find at any OfficeDepot. (The teacher in me can never write enough with dry erase markers!)
- Stratford Desktop Sorter: Free yourself from piles! Try a stylish metal desktop sorter to organize your transaction folders, mail, catalogs, notebooks, and more! Or use it to display business cards, brochures, and other marketing items.
- Boatman Gellar Notepads & Avie Stationery: Take your simple lined notepads to the next level with sophisticated yet whimsical notepads from designer Jane Boatman Geller. Perfect for quick lists, daily to-do’s, or causal correspondence. Also, Avie Stationery is quality custom stationery for business notes with a personal touch.
- Bella Leather Portfolios: Organize your to-dos, home prospecting info, notes, daily agenda, and more in an Italian leather portfolio in designer colors by Bella. I’m also a fan of the Acme Made laptop cases. Caution: these items will add some serious flare to your business wardrobe. Be prepared to be complimented!
- Smencils: An eco-friendly product that’s just plain fun! Made from recycled newspaper, Smencils not only smell great they’re also great for the planet. Scents include: cotton candy, cherry, watermelon, root beer, bubble gum, very berry, grape, popcorn, orange, and chocolate. I know what you’re thinking…and no I don’t hand out scented resumes….but I am legally blonde!
- The Personal Organizing Workbook (by Meryl Starr): You’ll find tips on everything from cleaning out your car to ending relationships that take up more time than they’re worth. Where was this book when I was in college?! Anyway, this workbook helps you work through the clutter and unwanted mess in your life…think of it as your Personal Clean Sweep!
Okay, I don’t expect you to try all or even any of these items or suggestions, but perhaps take a look at your desk today and throw out your Starbucks cup from Monday and update your desk calendar to the correct month and year. Get a little “organazized” and “Bob’s Your Uncle!”
TRIVIA FUN:
- Do you know who said, “One if these days I’m going to get myself organazized?”
- What does the phrase “Bob’s your uncle!” mean?

Great tips for getting organized. I find it easy if I use fewer tools - ie., one desk calendar, and one PDA. Then I just enter all the info in my PDA (Treo) and cross out the info on the calendar.
Great Blog!
Thanks,

Less can definitely be a plus and much easier to manage. I also favor having one written calendar and of course I don’t leave home without my Blackberry Curve!
But I guess the easiest organizational tool would be having a live assistant!!!

The office - organized.
The home office, well, I’ve given up!
As far as “Bob’s your Uncle!” it’s a phrase you’ll hear in the UK that’s preeety close to “And there you have it!” - kind of completion thing.

Hi Nicole,
Great post and list. Every time I think I am totally organized a pile of papers appears magically on my desk, and of course instead of filing them away I hop on the internet, and an hour later the pile has doubled. Thanks for the reminder to get back to work.

Marc- Hat’s off to you! You are correct…”Bob’s Your Uncle” is a common British phrase which implies that “success will come easily”…or “there you have it”. As for your home office…I concur..I actually had to leave a note for my house cleaners…”Do not clean my husband’s desk or touch his paper piles!”. I’m warming up the paper shredder right now!:)
Jen-SeeJaneWork has great gift ideas too…especially for your colleagues. Check out the “Really Smart Women Essentials”. See you at NAR in Vegas!
John-I can relate…there are so many things I’d rather do than attack the piles. I like paper sorters and trays….it gives your desk a nice organizational illusion! Good luck!
